Association of Women in Agriculture Benefit Corporation awards record breaking dollar amount in student scholarships
The Association of Women in Agriculture Benefit Corporation (AWABC) awarded 21 scholarships totaling over $20,000 to Association of Women in Agriculture (AWA) members during their annual meeting on Saturday, April 9.
Alexis Kwak received the Dr. Larry Satter Memorial Scholarship. She is majoring in political science, international studies and Chinese from Ridgeland, Wis. Dr. Larry Satter was a world-renowned dairy scientist who served as a long-time campus advisor to AWA. This year a second scholarship was awarded from this fund. Nicole Broege received the second $1,000 memorial scholarship. Nicole is a dairy science student from Janesville, Wis.
The Grateful Badgers scholarship alternates between AWA and Alpha Gamma Rho each year. It is given as an additional award to a member in recognition of their excellent standing in the organization and their achievements. Alexis Kwak was selected for her outstanding academics, involvement in AWA and other activities.
Olivia Spaight, a dairy science and life sciences communication student from Waterford, Wis., was awarded the Delma Woodburn Memorial Scholarship. Delma Woodburn shared an interest in women’s success in agriculture and provided encouragement and resources to AWA.
The Dr. David Dickson Scholarship was presented to Kylie Konyn of San Diego, Calif., who is studying dairy science with an agricultural business management certificate. Dr. David Dickson was known around the world for his dairy cattle evaluation and coaching skills. He made significant contributions to AWA and mentored many members.
The Cynthia Benevenga Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Mae Buttles from Prairie Farm, Wis., who is studying management and human resources, supply chain management and marketing. Cynthia Benevenga was an avid supporter of women’s education and AWA.
AWA House Resident Scholarships were awarded to six young women: Sara Johnson of Delavan, Wis. studying animal science, Sadie Goettl of Berlin, Wis. studying agricultural business management with certificates in public policy and integrated liberal studies, Emma Vos of Maribel, Wis. studying agricultural business management, Jaden Henneman of Whitewater, Wis. studying agricultural business management and psychology with a certificate in criminal justice, Jacee Johnson of Maribel, Wis. studying animal science and Kat Eugster of Stoughton, Wis. studying agricultural business management.
Five AWA Active Member scholarships were awarded to Kylie Nickels, Megan Moede, Megan Baker, Ashley Nelson and Alyson Buchholz.
Nickels hails from Waterford, Wis. and is studying dairy science with an agricultural business management certificate. Moede is from Algoma, Wis. and is studying agricultural business management. Baker of Yorkville, Wis. is studying biochemistry. Nelson of Stoughton, Wis. is studying animal science and biology. Buchholz of Mount Pleasant, Wis. is studying agriculture and applied economics with certificates in agricultural business management and sustainability.
McKenzie Trinko, Olivia McDonald and Natalie Roe each received $1,000 scholarships provided by Demeter. Demeter is a non-profit organization that provides fellowship and supports scholarships for students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Trinko is from Shawano, Wis. and is studying animal science with certificates in French and equine reproductive management. McDonald is from Janesville, Wis. and is studying life sciences communication with certificates in agricultural business management, entrepreneurship and food systems. Roe of Monticello, Wis. is studying dairy science.
The Nicole Bangart Memorial Scholarship was established in 2015 as the Bangart Family and Brady Kees provided a scholarship directly to a deserving AWA member. Now awarded through the Foundation, the Nicole Bangart Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Sophy Heinsz of Philadelphia, Pa. who is studying dairy science and spanish with a certificate in agricultural business management.
In addition, one memorial scholarship was given in honor of a former AWA member. The Kelsey Jo Olson Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Olivia Spaight of Waterford, Wis. This award was made possible by the Olson family.
