Association of Women in Agriculture Benefit Corporation Awards Student Scholarships
The Association of Women in Agriculture Benefit Corporation (AWABC) awarded 18 scholarships to Association of Women in Agriculture (AWA) members totaling $12,250 during their annual meeting on Saturday, April 18. Two additional $500 awards were presented by friends of AWA in memory of student members.
Lindsey Sarbacker received the Dr. Larry Satter Memorial Scholarship. She is a dairy science and life sciences communication double major with an agricultural business management certificate from Stoughton, Wis. Dr. Larry Satter was a world-renowned dairy scientist who served as a long-time campus advisor to AWA.
The Dr. David Dickson Scholarship was presented to Sabrina Servais of LaCrosse, Wis., who is studying dairy science and life sciences communication. Dr. David Dickson was known around the world for his dairy cattle evaluation and coaching skills. He made significant contributions to AWA and mentored many members.
Mena Schmitt, a dairy science student with a certificate in agricultural business management from Sun Prairie, Wis., was awarded the Delma Woodburn Memorial Scholarship. Delma Woodburn shared interest in women’s success in agriculture and provided encouragement and resources to AWA.
The Cynthia Benevenga Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Alexis Luedtke from Beaver Dam, Wis., who is studying biochemistry with a global health certificate. Cynthia Benevenga was an avid supporter of women’s education and AWA. Luedtke was also awarded the Grateful Badgers Scholarship, an award that rotates each year between AWA and Alpha Gamma Rho-Iota (AGR). This award is given to a member recognizing their excellent standing in the organization and their achievements.
AWA House Resident Scholarships were awarded to six young women: Kalista Hodorff of Eden, Wis. studying dairy science, Taylor Schaefer of Franksville, Wis. studying animal science and life sciences communication, Alexis Schultz of Lake Mills, Wis. studying agronomy with certificates in leadership and global health, Alexis Kwak of Prairie Farm, Wis. studying animal science, Kiley Henn of Deerfield, Wis. studying dairy science, and Jaden Hennemen of Whitewater, Wis. studying agribusiness management and psychology with a certificate in criminal justice.
Four AWA Active Member scholarships were awarded to Ashley Nelson, Amanda Giminez, Jenna Broege, and Kiley Eck.
Nelson hails from Forest Lake, Minn. and is studying biochemistry and plant pathology. Giminez is from Berlin, Wis. and is studying animal science. Broege of Janesville, Wis. is studying dairy science and life sciences communication. Eck of Lake Mills, Wis. is studying communication arts and political science with a certificate in gender and women’s studies.
Megan Lehr, Emily Franke, and Catherine Vickerman each received $1,000 scholarships supported by Demeter. Lehr is from Monticello, Wis. and is studying agricultural business management. Franke is from Oakfield, Wis. and is studying dairy science with a certificate in agricultural business management. Vickerman of Milton, Wis. is a genetics and genomics and life sciences communication student with a certificate in global health. Demeter is a non-profit organization that provides fellowship and supports scholarships for students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and staff.

In addition, two memorial scholarships were given in honor of former AWA members. The Nicole Bangart Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Kelsey Maurer of Newton, Wis., who is studying dairy science with a certificate in business management. The Bangart family and Brady Kees presented the award.
The Kelsey Jo Olson Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Emily Franke of Oakfield, Wis. This award was made possible by the Olson family.
